FAQ’s and Carpet Cleaning Tips
About Carpet Cleaning Tips
Here we have provided sensible answers to the
questions we are asked most frequently. If you
don’t see the answer to your question, feel free
to call us and we will make every effort to
assist you.
What method of carpet cleaning is preferred?
There are a lot of different ways to clean a
carpet. For a good, thorough cleaning you need
the following: a cleaning solution, agitation
(wand or an RX-20), ‘dwell time’ for the
solution to work, and a softened, neutralizing,
hot water rinse. You also need a truck-mounted
cleaning system to be able to deliver optimum
results. Steam cleaning also serves as a
disinfecting agent. The Chem/Dry cleaners do not
get the carpet as a wet, but do not provide the
deep, restoration cleaning of steam cleaning. A
little longer dry time is a small price to cay
to have your carpets thoroughly cleaned. Hot
water extraction is the only method recognized
by most major U.S. carpet manufacturers.

about do-it-yourself rental carpet cleaners?
Ideally, there should be a world of difference
in a professional cleaning versus a
do-it-yourself job. Professional equipment is
much more powerful, heats the water to a much
greater degree (up to 230 degrees), and the
suction power of a pro’s machine is incredible
next to a rental/home steamer. Homeowners have a
tendency to put too much soap, thinking ‘more is
better’ and with the inadequate suction of a
rental unit, leaves tremendous soap in the
carpet, only to attract dirt. You should be able
to tell the difference between a professional
cleaning and a cleaning that involves a cheap
rental machine. And while carpet cleaning is not
rocket science, there is some chemistry
involved. We also apply a neutralizer in our
rinse to bring your carpet back to a neutral pH,
which keeps it from getting dirtier quicker. A
properly trained technician will know which
types of spot cleaners are safe to use on
various spots and stains. At Scottsdale, we
participate in ongoing training and education
relating to our profession so we are always up
to date on the latest technology in carpeting
and cleaning methods. Carpet cleaning tips
should help you with minor every-day carpet care
techniques. More carpet cleaning tips below.

How long will it take for my carpets to dry?
Steam cleaning takes longer to dry because it is
a deep clean. At Scottsdale we ‘dry-stroke’ the
carpet, turn on all overhead fans, and open
windows (when temperatures allow). Living here
in Arizona, the low humidity helps the drying
process, which will take 6-12 hours. Make sure

My carpets don’t look dirty, should I have them
cleaned? Isn’t it true the more often you clean
a carpet, it will become dirtier faster?
Carpets need to be cleaned at least once a year.
Under more extreme traffic conditions, the
amount of kids and pets running in and out,
wearing shoes indoors, you might need to clean
your carpets twice a year. As far as a carpet
becoming dirtier faster, my wife refuses to
remove her shoes and we have a traffic pattern
between our master bedroom, bath, and her
office. To remove this traffic pattern I clean
my own carpets every three months. It is white,
six-years old, and still looks brand-new.

Should you wait as long as possible to clean
your carpet?
No,
Even if you vacuum a lot, there is nothing like
a deep, hot water, extraction cleaning to remove
the abrasive dirt and oils. The longer you wait
to have your carpet cleaned, the more cleaning
solution may be needed to remove these
pollutants. This causes more damage to your
carpet and will cause wear reducing the
life-expectancy of your carpet.

I get coupons all the time for really low whole
house rates. What is the difference between you
and other companies?
Sometimes when I am asked this, I don’t even
know where to begin. We all know the old adages
“if something seems too good to be true, it
probably is” and “you get what you pay for.” You
have invested thousands of dollars in the
carpeting in your home. Isn’t it wise to invest
in the maintenance of your carpet in the short
run, so you won’t have to replace it in the long
run? Ask around–it’s a guarantee some of your
friends and neighbors have used these coupon
people. Find out what their experiences have
been and check the company records with the
Better Business Bureau. And remember, the
bitterness of poor quality lingers long after
the sweetness of a cheap price is forgotten. We
do run specials, but our work is always 100%
guaranteed. Make sure you bookmark this page for

Should a carpet cleaning company be able to give
you an exact price quote over the telephone?
I honestly cannot give you an exact quote over
the phone. Here are a few things I consider when
quoting a price:
(1) First, I need to know the type of carpet
being cleaned.
(2) How badly soiled the carpet is.
(3) How long it has been between cleanings.
(4) Any unusual stains, pets or otherwise.
(5) If you want major furniture moved.
(6) How many rooms, stairways, and/or square
footage. To be honest with you, the owner isn’t
always accurate in their overall size and
condition estimations of their carpet. But we
always agree to price before the work is started
and that is exactly what you pay.

Can you give me a step-by-step to your cleaning
procedure?
1)We will start with a pre-inspection. At this
time please point out your areas of concern. We
will advise you of any permanent staining or
damage. We will give you an honest appraisal and
set job expectations at this time.
2) We will pre-condition traffic areas with
appropriate cleaning solutions to loosen
embedded soil.
3) We rinse and extract using softened,
neutralized, hot water. Depending on the
carpet’s condition we may first employee the use
of the RX-20, a top-of-the-line cleaning tool.
We then ‘wand’ over the same area, addressing
the edges and re-rinsing the same area again.
Additional wand, dry strokes will get your
carpet dryer, faster.
4) Apply carpet protectorant (optional but
recommended).
5) Post-inspection, we have you inspect our
work. We then rake the carpet to give it a
‘finished’ look. Other useful FAQ’s and carpet
